That was back when Balrogs came in the hundreds and
thousands. Later in life Tolkien decided that there must
have only ever been around 7 Barlogs maximum.

and in the process created some hardcore deserts.
they were also responsible for a few mass extinctions. mind you, they
wiped out species far more eleantly than humans do.
